The concept of the epergne dates back to French royalty of the 17th century, when it was used as an ostentatious table piece, usually of silver, to display delicacies such as sweetmeats. Two centuries later epergnes had become popular in many homes to serve fruits, nuts and other small items as well as for candles, cruets and flowers.

This 19th century epergne is clearly one made for the display of flowers. It is modeled as three poppy stems supporting a clear glass trumpet vase with acid-etched decorations of ferns beneath a wavy rim. The plated stand is resting on a naturalistic base of cast metal that is weighted for stability. The long, deeply-notched leaves are opulent and engraved with veins, contributing to the naturalistic appearance. The decorated glass trumpet vase adds to the overall opulence of the epergne and appears to be hand-blown. The deeply undulating, wavy top of the trumpet has a slightly rolled edge that helps intensify the beauty of the vase.

The condition of the plated stand is excellent. The glass vase is in excellent condition, especially for its age. The only fault to the glass as at the very bottom tip of the trumpet that rests well within the stand. This old glass chip is not visible when inserted into the stand and is something to be expected with everyday usage for well over a century.

The entire height of the epergne, including the vase, is 18-½ inches. It is about 6-¾ inches in diameter at the base. The diameter at the top of the fluted glass trumpet is 5 inches.

Please note: Some photos imply that the glass vase has a color, but this is from some background material. The vase is of clear glass.
