This is a very appealing portrait with a stunning folk art look. This genuine portrait miniature was painted in England during the 19th century, circa 1830. The watercolor portrait is on paper and is housed in its original faux grain gloss lacquered frame, behind its original glass and is complete with is original blue backing paper with later family inscription! Quite astonishing! The original ink inscription to the backing paper reads ‘Samuel Hurt, Died Feb 16th, 1854, aged 81 years.’

Samuel Hurt was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding in about 1773. His wife Sarah was born in about 1775 in Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding. Their daughter, Rebecca Hurt, was born in abt. 1811 in Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding.

In 1841 Samuel was working as a tilesmith and was living with his wife, Sarah, at Bolton Hall, Bolton Upon Dearne. Bolton Hall was a fine country house that was sadly demolished during the late 20th century. It was located at Carrhead Lane, Bolton Upon Dearne and only its stone wall remains. It’s grounds form part of what is now called Mansion Park.

In 1851 Samuel was working as a tile smith and was living with his wife, Sarah, and daughter Rebecca in Pond Street, Sheffield.
Samuel Hurt died in 1854 in Yorkshire West Riding, England and the death was registered in Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding, England. Sadly his wife, Sarah Hurt, also died a few months later in 1854 in Yorkshire West Riding, England and the death was registered in Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding, England.

The portrait features Samuel Hurt sitting in a chair; the artist was clearly extremely talented. The attention to detail is astonishing, just look at the detail to his pre 1836 short waisted frock coat with its high collar, V notch to the lapel, white stock cloth around his neck, five buttoned waist coat and swept forward natural hair. This is a fabulous, original artwork. We are very lucky to also have the portrait of Samuel’s wife Sarah which is sold separately in our store.
