Griffen, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, made this antique majolica water pitcher. It is a really beautiful piece of majolica. The color palette includes shades of green and shades of pink on a cream background. The colors appear just as fresh as the pitcher was made over 120 years ago. The pattern is "Shell and Seaweed." Overlapping ridged shells form the body of the pitcher and sprays of seaweed sprout from the base. The handle picks up the seaweed theme. The top edge of the pitcher is gilded and gilt outline the top sections of the full shells in the design. The pieces made by Griffen, Smith & Hill in this coloration are referred to as "Albino." Later the company made the same pattern in darker colors. On the bottom is the GSH mark encircled by a ring; the mark is blurred. There is some crazing on the bottom of the pitcher and the bottom of the interior shows some browning. Otherwise the pitcher is in amazing condition - no ships, hairlines, or repairs. The height is 6.75 inches and the diameter opening is 6 inches. The distance from tip of handle to tip of spout is 9.25 inches. It is a stunning piece.
